Law of Attraction Classics: Your Invisible Power – How Genevieve Behrend Attracted Twenty Thousand Dollars
Genevieve Behrend’s Story
The first issue in the laboratory of experience where my newly revealed relationship to Divine operation was to be tested was a pecuniary one. My salary was set, and it was sufficient for my daily needs.
However, it did not appear to be adequate to enable me to travel comfortably to England, where Troward resided, and remain there indefinitely to study with such a great instructor as he must be. So, before asking if Troward took students or if I would be eligible if he did, I started reciting the paragraph I had learned.
"My mind is a center of Divine action, and Divine operation means expansion into something better than has gone before," I told myself virtually every day.
I'd read about the Law of Attraction in the Edinburgh Lectures, and I'd gotten a hazy sense of visualizing from the Chapter on "Causes and Conditions."
So, every night before going to bed, I visualized the desired $20,000 in my mind. Each night in my bedroom, I counted over twenty $1,000 bills, and then, in order to more emphatically impress upon my mind that this money was for the purpose of going to England and studying with Troward, I drew a picture of myself buying a Steamer ticket, walking up and down the in the deck from New York to London, and finally, seeing myself accepted as Troward's pupil.
Every morning and evening, this procedure was repeated, instilling more and more thoroughly in my memory Troward's memorized statement: "My mind is a center of Divine activities." I made an effort to maintain this sentence in the back of my mind at all times, with no notion of how the money may be gotten.
Probably because I couldn't conceive where the $20,000 would come from, I didn't consider the possible routes via which the money could reach me. So I simply kept my thoughts constant and let the law of attraction work its magic.
"My mind is unquestionably a center of Divine function," I thought one day as I walked down the street doing deep breathing exercises. If God fills all space, then God must also be in my head; if I desire this money to study with Troward so that I might know the reality of Life, then both the money and the truth must be mine, even if I can't feel or see their physical manifestations; yet," I asserted, "it must be mine."
While these thoughts were running through my head, the thought "I am all the substance there is" seemed to emerge from within me. Then, from another part of my brain, came the response, "Of course, that's it; everything has to start somewhere."
The "I," or Idea, must be the single and most fundamental entity, which includes money as well as everything else." My mind embraced this concept, and all of my mental and physical anxiety dissipated almost instantly.
There was a sense of total conviction that I was in contact with all of Life's force. In the huge flood of delight that rushed over my entire body, all thoughts of money, teacher, or even my own personality evaporated.
I walked on and on, my joy steadily growing and extending until everything around me seemed to be bathed in radiant light. Everyone I passed was as bright as I was. All awareness of one's own identity had vanished, and in its place was a deep, almost overpowering sense of joy and contentment.
That night, I took my picture for the twenty thousand dollars from a completely different perspective. When I made my mental picture in the past, I felt like I was reawakening something within myself. There was no sense of exertion this time. I simply tallied the money, which totaled to twenty thousand dollars.
Then, in an unexpected manner, a possible channel for the money to reach me appeared to open up from a source of which I was completely unaware at the time.
It required a lot of work at first to stay calm. Being in touch with supply looked so beautiful, so glorious. But hadn't Troward warned his readers to keep all enthusiasm out of their heads during the initial few moments of realizing the union with infinite supply, and to treat it as a completely normal byproduct of human demand?
This was even more difficult for me than holding the notion that "all the substance there is, I am; I (idea) am the beginning of all form, visible or invisible," because "all the substance there is, I am."
I not only made a supreme effort to regard the indicated direction calmly as the first sprout of the seed I had sown in the absolute, but I also left no stone unturned to follow up that direction by fulfilling my part as soon as a circumstance appeared that indicated the direction through which the twenty thousand dollars might come. By doing so, one scenario seemed to naturally lead to another, until, step by step, I was able to get my desired twenty thousand dollars.
My greatest endeavor was to keep my head calm and free of excitation.
This first tangible result of my study of Mental Science as stated in Troward's book had resulted from a diligent application of his methodology. In this regard, I can offer the reader no better gift than to quote Troward's book, "The Edinburgh Lectures," from which a complete picture of the course of action I was attempting to follow can be formed.
"To attain effective results, we must properly understand our relation to the immense impersonal power we are harnessing," he adds in the chapter on Causes and Conditions. It is intelligent, just as we are, and the two intelligences must work together.
We must not defy the Law by expecting it to do for us what it can only do through us; instead, we must use our intelligence in the knowledge that it is acting as an instrument of a greater intelligence; and because we have this knowledge, we can and should let go of all concerns about the end result.
In practice, we must first form an ideal conception of our object with the specific intent of impressing it upon the universal mind - it is this thought that elevates such thought above the realm of mere whimsy -and then affirm that our knowledge of the Law is sufficient reason for a calm expectation of a corresponding result, and that all necessary conditions will thus arrive in due time.
We can then go about our regular lives with the peace of mind that the initial prerequisites are either there or will be soon. If we don't see them right away, let us be content with the understanding that the spiritual prototype already exists and wait until a circumstance pointing in the right direction appears.
It could be a minor occurrence, but it is the direction, not the magnitude, that needs to be considered.
As soon as we see it, we should regard it as the first sprouting of the seed sown in the Absolute, and do calmly and without excitement whatever the circumstances seem to require, and later on, we will see that this doing will lead to another circumstance in the same direction, until we find ourselves being led, step by step, to the accomplishment of our goal.
In this way, understanding the great principle of the Law of Supply will, through repeated experiences, deliver us more and more completely out of the realm of anxious thought and arduous labor, and into a new world where the useful employment of all our powers, mental and physical, will only be an unfolding of our individuality along the lines of its own nature, and thus a perpetual source of health and happiness; a sufficient inducement, surely.
This quotation, to my mind, represents the core and center of the method and way of approach required for connecting with Infinite supply, both then and now. At the very least, it, along with the previously cited phrase, "My mind is a center of Divine function," etc., seemed to be the only way to attract the twenty thousand dollars to myself.
My persistent effort to get into the spirit of these statements and attract to myself the requisite sum lasted about six weeks, at the conclusion of which time I got the required twenty thousand dollars in my bank account. This might be turned into a long story with all the intricacies, but the facts, as already said, will give you a clear picture of my mental state as the twenty thousand dollars made its way to me.
